Streszczenie

Wśród dużej kolekcji malowideł ściennych ze sławnych wykopalisk Kazimierza Michałowskiego w Faras w Sudanie pochodzi kilka portretów królów i wysokich urzędników dworskich przedstawianych zwykle pod ochroną figur świętych, uzupełnionych ostatnio o liczne malowidła tego samego rodzaju znalezione w Górnym Kościele w Banganarti. Artykuł koncentruje się na problemie identyfikacji postaci lokalnych urzędników, z których piętnastu przedstawionych jest ubranych w hełmy różnych typów. Większość z nich w poprzednich publikacjach uznawana była za królów nubijskich, podczas gdy w opinii autora tego artykułu, brak na to dowodów. Istnieje pewna rozbieżność pomiędzy mnogością przedstawień a ubogim stanem materiału epigraficznego, który mógłby posłużyć do identyfikacji pozycji przedstawionych urzędników o z nakryciach głowy z rogami. Zaskakujące jest, że znane są tylko trzy przypadki, w których w inskrypcji towarzyszącej przedstawieniu wzmiankowana jest nazwa urzędu, a jedynie w jednym wypadku informacja ta może być traktowana jako pewna. Teksty te dyskutowane są w artykule i wszystkie zdają się wskazywać na nomarchę Nobadii jako dygnitarza uprawnionego do noszenia nakrycia głowy z rogami. Nie istnieje żadna inna dostępna ewidencja, podczas gdy wszystkie informacje zawarte w inskrypcjach dotyczących królów nubijskich odnoszą się do postaci przedstawionych z bizantyjskim typem korony, tj. różnymi diademami z pinnae lub kamelaukionem i, niestety, do postaci z koronami nie zachowanymi. Z drugiej strony przypuszczenie, że korona z rogami mogłaby być używana również przez królów nubijskich w okresie późnochrześcijańskim jest warta rozważenia, choćby z jednego powodu: podobieństwa pomiędzy strojem i atrybutami króla i eparchy pojawiające się w malarstwie, chociaż w tym momencie hipoteza ta wydaje się być przedwczesna i powinno się zaczekać na znalezienie świadectw pisanych.
