Abstract

Since 2009 the German Archaeological Institute undertakes geoarchaeological research in the valley to the east
of the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur. While excavating the lower causeway of the Bent Pyramid, about 50 fragments
with relief decoration were discovered so far. The relief fragments originally belonged to the valley temple of the
Bent Pyramid. Two fragments are discussed in detail. The first fragment shows a personification of an estate and
the sign of the 8th Upper Egyptian nome. The second one shows a fecundity figure presenting a papyrus bundle.
The original placement of the fragments on the pillars of the valley temple as well as the iconography and style
of the relief are discussed. The newly discovered fragments provide important new information for the
understanding of the decoration program of the oldest decorated valley temple of the Old Kingdom.
